Words and Shapes

Words. A combination of letters. Sound patterns. Shared semiotic codes of communication.
Meaning produced by means of symbolic verbal signs based on convention. Spoken, written, heard, read.
You will notice that the words, the “poems” on this website are meant to be seen. In addition to their content it is their visual characteristics that create meaning.

"I am vertical"

Sylvia Plath

Gabriele

Gabriele, born in 1963, lives in two very contrasting places – the lively and multicultural Ruhr area and the quiet seaside of Frisia, Germany.

She graduated in languages and business and worked with several training and consulting companies.  Bringing a lot of enthusiasm to her current occupation as a vocational teacher she still has a passionate heart for nature, music, literature, dance and, above all, poetry.

Gabriele has been writing stories and conventional” poems ever since she began to read literature.

Inspired by her love of language and communication Words and Shapes is a website on her approach to visual poetry.

Inspired by her love of language and communication Words and Shapes is a website on her approach to visual poetry. After a lifetime of writing just for the sake of self-expression it is the first time she shares part of her work publicly.

Just Words?

“Conventional” poetry is made of sense, sound and rhythm. Visual poems or shaped poems like Words and Shapes by Gabriele also exploit the possibilities of space so that textual and visual rhetoric interact to create meaning.

Gabriele uses individual words outside of traditional syntax. Arrangement, repetition, fragmentation, size, density, movement and color are her tools of visual rhetoric.

These additional elements of meaning require the reader to find connections and ideas that are suggested spatially.
